I think It’s time to lighten the load!
Let’s shift gears. Let’s look to seek joy, create happiness, spread good energy.
For me, drumming is a great tool. When I drum, I’m able to get out of my own head, let my brain and body focus on the rhythm and just let go. And then, inevitably, the “fun” factor creeps in. I start to move a little. It feels good. It’s happy and playful. And then I feel my stress level drop, my brain hit the reset button, and my energy rise. And when I drum with a group … well that’s a whole different level of fun and connection! It’s community. It’s coming together and sharing a beat. And it’s so restorative and FUN!
I recently watched the new movie/documentary, We All Just Need to Drum! It’s worth the watch. And it’s worth the effort to JUST DRUM!
The movie trailer identifies so many innate benefits of drumming circles – drumming together. Here are a few:
Drumming Literally Shifts and Resets the Brain
When under stress the lower part of the brain works to keep the upper part of the brain from fretting. But since the lower part of the brain has then essentially “taken over”, it keeps the upper part from functioning well, which effects your ability to think clearly and logically. The brain becomes “foggy.”
When drumming, the brain is forced to concentrate on the task at hand and shift the focus away from stress. This opens the neuro pathways and essentially clears and resets the mind.
Drumming Circles Bring People Together
Drumming transcends cultural and race boundaries. It’s a great equalizer. People of all ages and ethnicities have been making music together for thousands of years. It’s in our DNA.
When drumming with a group it’s simply about creating and sharing the beat. The rhythm. Everything else is stripped away. It’s liberating and refreshing. And it’s powerful.
Drumming Increases Endorphins
Drumming clearly involves movement. Consistent movement. And consistent movement – exercise – releases endorphins in the body which elevates the mood and sense of well being.
Drumming Awakens the Soul
Life itself involves rhythm. There is the rhythm of nature. The consistent beat of our hearts. The tempo of our breath. Our pulse.
Tapping into a consistent rhythm is inherently very grounding. It connects us to ourselves, to the earth, to nature, to life. It can be spiritual in a sense. And it’s just good for the soul.
I invite you to watch We All Just Need to Drum! Or at the very least – the trailer. I invite you to drum. I invite you to DROM with me and the DROM community!
